Traditional fossil fuel powered garden equipment releases significant air pollution, including hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, which are harmful to our health and the environment. This equipment lacks the emission controls found in modern cars, and consequently emits 4-50 times more pollution per unit of run time than a modern car (depending on the pollutant and type of engine being measured).
We use all-electric garden equipment. This eliminates direct emissions, fuel spills, and reduces noise and air pollution during our service.
While we use electric tools, we still have vehicle emissions and indirect carbon emissions. We offset 200% of our calculated carbon footprint through the Effective Altruism Australia Environment Fund. This fund focuses on systemic environmental solutions like policy reform and technology development for greater long-term impact.
While Net Negative Gardening is a for-profit company, we believe being profitable and doing good aren't mutually exclusive. This is why we've taken the Giving What We Can pledge to donate 10% of our profits (or 1% of revenue if higher) to charities that maximize their positive impact.
We believe what ultimately matters is how people feel during and about their lives. Traditional metrics like income and health are important primarily because of how they affect subjective wellbeing.
Working with research from the Happier Lives Institute, we focus on interventions measured by WELLBYs (wellbeing-adjusted life years) to identify which programs create the most wellbeing per dollar spent.
We direct our donations to StrongMinds through Effective Altruism Australia. Their mental health support in Uganda and Zambia delivers impressive results:
Each USD $1,000 (approximately AUD $1,565) creates approximately 40 WELLBYs
It costs about USD $45 (approximately AUD $70) to provide treatment to one person
Benefits include a 16% positive spillover effect on household members
